Emerging fully formed from the dark underground, heavily psychedelic Dunedin two piece Triumphs (John Bollen, guitar/Mat Anderson, drums) release their debut album, an instrumental concept LP, on vinyl and download in late 2015 through Monkey Killer Records. The album, Beekeeper/Bastardknocker, pays tribute to New Zealand's forgotten history of psychedelic mountaineering through mind-bending riffs and ritualistic drums, tracing Sir Edmund Hilary's transformation from humble beekeeper to world-striding bastardknocker. The artwork, by fellow Dunedin outsider Sam Ovens, provides a mixture of images and symbols to decipher alongside track titles such as Everest Was the First Pyramid, Holographic Peak and the consummate Bastardknocker.
Evoking the heavier end of the experimental noise spectrum, Triumphs colour a similar palette to Russian Circles, Big Business, Sleep and Earthless, while their more contemplative moments fondly recall the singular Operation Rolling Thunder. Achieving a formidable live sound through multiple amps and simple wizardry, Triumphs decided to capture their resonant noise in May 2015 with sonic soundsmith Dale Cotton, whose recording credits include The Bats, Beastwars, High Dependency Unit, and Monkey Killer labelmates Mountaineater and Operation Rolling Thunder.
